Sudan

For decades, Sudan has been a particularly brutal hotbed of chattel slavery. The extremist government in the north of the country supports militias which travel to the impoverished south, destroying villages, raping women and girls, and bringing human "booty" — mainly women and children — back to the north as slaves.

	Get a Task Force on the Ground in Sudan Since the '80s, Sudan has experienced a surge in slavery cases. Despite great effort by the U.S. government to bring about peace, the UN reports that slaves are still being taken in Darfur (an area not covered by peace talks). Demand that the U.S. create a special Task Force to investigate slavery in Sudan.
	TIAA-CREF Divest If you hold a pension plan or investments with TIAA-CREF (and even if you don't), take a moment to demand that they respond to one of the most urgent and horrific crises of our time by divesting from a number of international corporations doing business in Sudan.
	Ending the Genocide Takes Action The United Nations should have been the most active body working to stop genocide in Sudan, but thanks to certain members of the Security Council with oil ties to Sudan, the U.N. has remained largely silent. Tell them that the last thing they should be doing is standing idly by.
	Massachusetts Divest The state of Massachusetts has almost $1.5 billion invested in companies that do business in Sudan, thus supporting the genocide and slave raids there. Sign our petition to get the state government to divest funds which pay for genocide.
	Secretary Rice, Keep your Eyes on Sudan! In 2005, President Bush and the State Department elevated Sudan's status as a nation complicit in human trafficking/slavery — despite ongoing slave raids, Sudan is now ranked the same as countries like Switzerland, Greece, and Hungary. Urge Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to reverse this decision.

Mauritania

Mauritanian society is almost entirely dependent on a system of chattel slavery nearly 1,000 years old. Many Mauritanians are slaves from birth, raised to believe that the only way they will get into heaven is to serve their masters faithfully. Slaves in Mauritania have no legal rights, and are held by their masters as inheritable property over generations.

Free Khadama

On November 6, a 14-year-old girl named Khadama was rescued from slavery in the African country of Mauritania. Less than 12 hours after she reported her enslavement to the police, she was returned to her owner, who wasn't even questioned. It's nothing short of an outrage that Khadama could be so betrayed by a system meant to protect her. Tell international leaders to take strong action against this injustice.
